Google Lens is a photo tool. Video is a different problem.

Google Lens is very good at identifying a clear photograph of a distinctive object. A video is not a clear photograph of a distinctive object. It is twenty-eight blurred frames of a hand moving, plus a voice saying the product name out loud — and Lens cannot hear.

That's the whole shape of it. Lens is worth reaching for, and it's worth knowing where it stops.

What Lens genuinely solves

When you can pause on a clean frame and the object has a distinctive silhouette or pattern, Lens is excellent and usually instant. Furniture, rugs, packaged goods, plants, book covers, a printed dress — anything where the shape is the identifying feature.

Pausing a video and taking a screenshot, then running that screenshot through Lens, is a real workflow and often the fastest route to an answer. On YouTube Shorts, Google has built Lens in directly, so a paused frame can be searched without leaving the app.

The sharpest limitation is a policy one rather than a technical one. Google disables Lens on YouTube Shorts that carry Shopping affiliate tags or are marked as paid promotions.

Read that again in terms of what you were trying to do. The videos where a creator is actively showing you a product are disproportionately the sponsored and affiliate-tagged ones — and those are precisely the videos where the button is not there.

What a screenshot throws away

Even the screenshot workflow starts from a handicap. A screenshot of a video is a picture of a compressed picture: the platform has already crushed the footage to stream it, and fine texture — fabric weave, a debossed logo, the finish that separates a $340 bag from its $40 lookalike — is exactly what compression destroys first.

The frame is also colour-graded. Creators film under ring lights and warm filters, which is why the same lipstick looks coral in one video and brick in another. A visual match made from that frame inherits every one of those distortions. This isn't a flaw in Lens; it is what happens when the input is a still from someone else's edit.

One practical counter: add words to the picture. Lens supports combining an image with a text refinement — search the screenshot, then add “matte” or the brand you half-heard — and that hybrid query is meaningfully better than the image alone. It is also, quietly, an admission of the whole limitation: the picture by itself wasn't enough.
